NORTH WALES WOMEN'S LEAGUE

Caernarfon Town 4 Denbigh Town 2

Caernarfon Town stormed into the semi-finals of the North Wales Women’s Football League’s Betty Pickering Cup with a 4-2 win over Denbigh Town at The Oval.

It was a second win of the season over Denbigh for the Canaries following last month’s 4-1 success at Central Park.

Town were up for the task from the start when they took on the current league champions last Sunday.

Caernarfon worked well as a team, constantly pressing hard to close the opposition down and stop them from playing.

And when they attacked, the Cofis made the most of their chances.

Denbigh took the lead when Chelsea Williams netted with a well-placed volley.

However, the hosts were level soon after when a good run and cross from Ffion Owen led to Heledd Evans half-volleying into the bottom corner.

Caernarfon went 2-1 up when a Sioned Bohana corner was finished off from close range by former Wales international Katie Williams.

The lead was stretched when Gwawr Williams inadvertently headed a Kim Broadbent corner into her own net.

And victory was sealed when Lexi Musgrave continued her fine start on returning as a Caernarfon player when she lobbed home following a Heledd Evans free kick.

Chelsea Williams responded with a second for Denbigh before the end but the home side finished up worthy winners.

Caernarfon are due to host Pwllheli in a league game tomorrow (Wednesday) and then entertain Kinmel Bay in another league fixture this Sunday (1pm).

There were mixed fortunes for other Gwynedd sides in the Betty Pickering Cup.

Pwllheli breezed into the semis with a 6-0 verdict at Point.

Stacey Roberts and Mari Hughes netted two goals apiece, Holly Beddal and Holly Williams also on target.

It was not such a good day for Bethel, who were trounced 4-1 at Airbus.

Alaw Huws was the sole markswoman for the visitors, Becky Lees (3) and Laura Borley seeing the Wingmakers through.

In the other last-eight tie, Amlwch Town pipped Llanfair United 1-0, Anna Roberts with the only goal.

There was just one North Wales League game played, Gap Northop Hall romping to a 7-0 triumph at Kinmel Bay.

Annmarie Jones was the main destroyer for the visitors with four goals, while debutant Shannon Hobbs knocked in a brace.

Barbara Agnieszka Nadworna brought up the magnificent seven for the Flintshire outfit.

WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE

MBi Llandudno tuned up for this Sunday’s Welsh Cup Final in style with a 5-1 away hammering of Cyncoed.

The result was sweet revenge for Tudno, who were unlucky to be ‘mugged’ 1-0 at home by the Cardiff students earlier this season.

Llandudno made a positive start, Sofie Owen opening the scoring directly from a corner.

Rosie Hughes made it two with a great strike from the edge of the box, before Owen and Katie Louise Bowe added further goals to make it 4-0 at half time.

On the hour Owen completed her third hat-trick of the season and Llandudno could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty from Claire Colville.

Kelsey Davies was player of the match for the visitors, who replaced Jemila Bukari and Stacey Tradewell in the second half as a precaution ahead of next weekend’s final at Newtown.

Rhyl and Prestatyn remain deep in relegation trouble after going down 3-1 at home to Cwmbran Celtic.

North Walian Wales international Lois Regan bagged a brace and Lauren Boyd a single for the visitors, Laura Williams with a late reply for the hosts.

LLANDUDNO Junction, whose team contained many of the current MBi Llandudno side, as well as manager Sarah Colville, set a record when they beat Caerphilly Castle 26-0.
However, the result was later expunged from the archives when troubled Caerphilly resigned from the league.

A WOMEN’S football team has entered the record books after racking up an incredible 26 goals in one game.

Llandudno Junction Ladies FC steamrollered Caerphilly Castle 26-0 on Sunday claiming the biggest win in top flight women’s football – or for that matter men’s – in Wales.

As well as claiming the biggest win, the Junction side probably scored the fastest brace in history, knocking in two goals in the opening 90 seconds – the first was scored in just 23 seconds at their home at the Old Hotpoint Club on Victoria Drive.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) confirmed the scoreline is the highest recorded in the country.

Eight of the home side got in on the goalscoring act with Sarah Lawson bagging seven, including the first and last. Sofie Owen, who scored six, also scored within a minute of the restart in the Women’s Welsh Premier League match.

The other scorers were Simone Drummond (4), Steph Short, Gail Naylor (2) Stacey Tradewell (2) and Jenn Davies and Katie Lewtas with one apiece.

Sunday’s result was a stunning bounce back for the side which itself was hammered 11-1 last week by Cardiff City.

That is why assistant manager Anne Jones refused to get carried away by the scoreline. Her deadpan response to the Daily Post was refreshingly grounded: “It wasn’t a bad result.”

She praised the players for a “spectacular performance” but in true football manager speak she was happier that the team “kept a clean sheet and defended well” and disappointed they didn’t score more.

“They couldn’t cope with us on the day and it should have been more, well over 30 if we took our chances. But they only had nine players and they battled very, very hard throughout the game. We were beaten 11-1 by Cardiff City so we know how the Caerphilly team will be feeling.”

Anne added: “The quality of the football in this league (which is in its debut year) and the standard of the opposition is far higher.”

That’s why there was no celebration after the game and why she won’t be “easing up” on the players during tonight’s training session. “We have a tough game coming against Swansea to get ready for,” she said.

Manager Sarah Colville also offered words of encouragement to the South Wales side: “Fair play to Caerphilly, they showed the commitment to make the long journey here and stuck at it for 90 minutes. They were a great bunch of girls and I hope things get better for them.

“I felt the same sympathy for them as I did for us last week. There are long journeys and some very difficult games in this league, but you've got to keep at it.”

KELSEY'S LATE STRIKE SEALS IT FOR TUDNO

Match-winner Kelsey Davies hauled herself away from her university studies to score the deciding goal in the 83rd minute of tonight's derby at the Corbett Sports Stadium.

Davies typified the spirit in the Llandudno camp, and indeed women's football in general, by racing against the clock from Liverpool to arrive in Rhyl 10 minutes before kick-off.

Her late goal settled a hard-fought encounter which ensured Tudno moved three points clear of their North Wales rivals in the Welsh Premier Women's League table.

Llandudno created the majority of chances in the opening half-hour, Rosie Hughes firing wide after great work from Stacey Tradewell in the 14th minute.

Tradewell then produced a remarkable turn and dummy which sold two defenders down the river before Sofie Owen lashed over the bar.

A run and shot from Tradewell saw home keeper Megan Roberts save comfortably, then Owen's dipping effort just cleared the goal frame.

R and P had a great opportunity from a Laura Williams corner but Ashleigh Mills headed wide.

Samantha Jarvis-Evans set up Tudno top scorer Katie Louise Bowe, whose 15-yard attempt was unusually off target.

Bowe's free kick was then well held by Roberts with Tradewell a fraction away from getting a decisive touch.

R and P's Cassandra Thomas delivered a lovely free kick into the six-yard box on 43 minutes but no-one in a white shirt was prepared to gamble and the ball drifted wide.

HALF-TIME: 0-0

The hosts began the second half well, a Phoebe Davies shot flying straight at visiting keeper Jess Hughes before Mills lashed over from 10 yards.

Some strong tackles were going in on both sides, the midfield battle between Tradewell and Davies a very interesting one.

Then in the 73rd minute Llandudno came so close when Bowe's free kick was cleared off the line, and from the rebound Jarvis-Evans rattled the post.

Tudno now piled on the pressure, Bowe and Tradewell playing a lovely one-two before the latter lost control and tried an innovative back-heel which did not come off.

Another Bowe free kick was grasped at the second attempt by Roberts, but the hosts gradually rode the storm and started to threaten themselves.

Tudno keeper Hughes was at full stretch to keep out a Laura Williams curler and Tonicha Dickens lashed the loose ball over the top.

A cross from R and P substitute Lucy Davies was cleared in desperation, but then came the crucial breakthrough.

Llandudno countered and Bowe hit a majestic left-foot pass into the path of Davies who lobbed outcoming keeper Roberts to make it 1-0.

R and P tried to rally but were now vulnerable on the break, player of the match Tradewell blasting a free kick just over before Hughes missed by inches from a Davies cross.

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Rhyl and Prestatyn host MBi Llandudno tonight (Tuesday) in a genuine Welsh Premier Women's League six-pointer at the Corbetts Sports Stadium (7.30pm kick-off).

Both teams are on 14 points, although Tudno are two places above Rhyl in seventh as they have a considerably better goal difference.

The sides have met just once previous this season and that was in the Welsh Cup at Maesdu Park when Llandudno won 4-0.

Their return league encounter takes place at Maesdu on Sunday, April 24.

Following the demise of Wrexham, this is now the league's only North Wales derby.

Last Sunday saw both teams gain 1-1 away draws - Rhyl and Prestatyn at Newcastle Emlyn and Tudno at Port Talbot.

Bottom side Emlyn secured only their second point of the season.

Rebecca Bannister put the visitors in the lead in the 16th minute and Rhyl and Prestatyn looked to be taking all three points home until Jess Hammett scored for Emlyn late into added time to earn the home side a well needed point.

In the other game, Port Talbot took the lead through a goal from Jesci Hare in the 25th minute. Katie Louise Bowe equalised for Llandudno in the 55th minute with a trademark free kick, giving both sides a point apiece.

It was top-scorer Bowe's 14th goal of the season.

NORTH WALES WOMEN'S LEAGUE

Caernarfon Town remain seven points clear at the summit after a hard-fought 2-0 win at bottom side Point.

Ffion Owen and Lexi Musgrave netted for the Cofis, but they were made to battle all the way by a much-improved home team.

Denbigh Town returned to winning ways with a 3-1 success at Pwllheli.

Goalscorers for the champions were Lexi Smith with two, a great strike from outside the box and the second a finish from inside the area, then Chelsea Williams made it three direct from a corner.

Pwllheli got a late consolation through Nia Jones.

Bethel overcame Llanfair United 3-1 to move up to fourth. Alaw Huws, Mari Gibbard and Ffion Williams netted for the hosts, Nia Ellis responding.

Amlwch Town v gap Northop Hall was postponed.
